Whole-ly Soul Cleanse

One of the hardest things about undergoing a spiritual awakening is realizing that some of the things in your life are not the way that they have been presented to you.  Religion is arguably the most integral part of our being and one of the most sensitive subjects to bring up with anyone who may not agree with your views.  Growing up as a Christian you learn early on that religion is exactly what “they” tell you it is, and the bible is verbatim with no room for questioning.  If, you are lucky enough to be a part of the inquisitive group of individuals who decide to learn more on their own, you begin to expand and explore outside of your said religion and learn that Christianity, Islam, and Judaism are all fundamentally from the same place, and that place, is based in what has been defined as a pagan origin.  You can spend a lifetime arguing the rights and wrongs, truth and lies, My God vs your God, without ever realizing that the truth is right in front of your eyes.  What is the truth you ask?  Well, the truth is that God is love. And God can be whatever you need.  Call God the Universe, Call God Feminine Divine, refuse to define God at all, it does not matter because in the end, love is the common denominator across all beliefs.

Although modern Christianity has clearly been “borrowed” from traditional pagan practices to spread the Christian faith, it is important to see and accept the parallels between Christianity and Paganism. As I have come of age, I have decided to let the argument fall wherever any person chooses to let it be.  I do not care who you do or do not believe in, it does not matter to me what names or dates you use, whose name you choose to call upon, or if you just believe in energy.  Your beliefs are yours alone and that is what makes you special.  Do not be fooled by the lies of the ego when the truth is within.

With that said, I want to circle back to Lent and Ash Wednesday.  In a nutshell, within the Christian faith Lent is the six-week period leading up to Easter that begins on Ash Wednesday and includes a 40-day fast in imitation of Jesus Christ's fasting in the wilderness before he began his ministry.  There are specific sets of rules or practices that are followed by believers within the Christian faith depending on which sect of Christianity an individual is prescribed to during this period.

Although there are no direct ties to lent outside of the Christian faith, Ash Wednesday can be tied directly to Pagan rituals, For example,

“The practice of putting ashes on one's forehead has been known from ancient times. The Norse practice which has become known as Ash Wednesday was itself, drawn from the Vedic Indian religion. Ashes were believed to be the seed Agni, the Indian fire god. It is from this name that the Latins used for fire, ignis. It is from this root word that the English language got the words, ignite, igneous and ignition. Agni was said to have the authority to forgive sins. Ashes were also believed to be symbolic for the purifying blood of the Vedic god Shiva, which it is said had the power to cleanse sins.”[i]

So many dates, characters, references, and more found within biblical text can be referenced back to pagan traditions.  This returns me again to my point that love is the only answer. And rather or whether you pray to God, the Universe, Gaia or whomever your choice may be, universal laws apply. Those universal laws include:

  • Striving to always be aligned with your highest self.

  • Living in a space full of light and love

  • Understanding the bigger picture

  • Being one with Nature and respect for all things

Every year for lent, I participate in a practice that I refer to as a 40-Day soul Cleanse  This practice includes:
